We met in Sydney when we were 7 at Primary School and we were friends all the way through.  But, as happens to Australians, we both became globetrotters and inevitably lost track.

Fast forward to 2002 and, as happens to mothers, we were pushing buggies around Bethnal Green in London's East End.  We quite literally bumped into each other in the street on the way to the kids' swimming lessons at York Hall.

Neighbours again and mothers of small daughters, we got to thinking about how to combine work and the looming  school run. 

Just the job for mum

SINGLE mum Marianne Bowdler started off her eBay selling career by LOSING money.

She bought a wireless keyboard for 6.99 and could only get rid of it for 0.

But that was a year ago and now her Zippy Sisters eBay shop will top the 0,000 turnover threshold next year.

Marianne runs the company with photographer pal Jayne Russell from her home in London East End, where they buy and sell urban fashion accessories.

At any one time their mixed bag of goods has 500 auctions running. eBay has given Marianne, 40, a lifeline of independence.

She is the only breadwinner in her family, which includes her five-year-old daughter Sophie and mum Anne, 73, who is in remission from cancer.

Marianne, who is also looking after her ten-year-old niece and six-year-old nephew, said: f I did a regular job, I would have to pay for a childminder.

he three children have all had chickenpox but because of the eBay business I could still work from home. My priority is to be there for everyone and provide for them materially. eBay means that I can juggle everything because I can look after the family and still work. If I did not do this I would be staying at home and living on benefits.
