Definitely Sound have been trading in vinyl records for the past two decades. We are interested in buying and selling music from all eras and styles covering the past 70 years, or as long as music has been produced on round wax! This is because we are music fans and into the great sounds from all eras no matter what the genre; there's just so much to hear and the only way to have any chance of covering as much as possible is to have music a constant part of our daily life, which it is. For that reason you're as likely to find some cutting edge 21st Century Electronica as you are some cool 1940s Blue Note Jazz or indeed anything inbetween. We go out on our musical treasure hunts and bring the findings to our eBay shop every week so don't miss out! This all began back in 1990 with a small advert I booked in the record listings found in the back pages of Record Collector Magazine. Lots of record dealers used that at the time; pre-eBay it was the place where most of the traders on the Record Fair circuit launched their mail order sales. The advert stays with me for a few reasons; I remember a bloke from Manchester on the phone practically the second the magazine hit the stands very excited that I had a copy of Sweet's 'Strung Up' LP. He went to the trouble of writing a thank you letter after receiving it as well. I also recall a disappointed customer on the phone after getting some Beatles EP's that I'd listed as 60s pressings and they weren't. I had no idea how you told the difference back then, or even how much it mattered. All the records in the advert did sell out though, although I later realised this was because everything I'd listed was under priced!
I continued doing a bit of occasional selling through the pages of Record Collector in 1991. One time I tried listing in the auction format and set a closing date for written postal offers. The date was the day before the magazine came out. In 1992 I'd assembled enough stock to go out selling at my first Record Fair. This was at the Memorial Hall in Sawbridgeworth and I had a spectacularly good day; once again I'd priced everything too low. Anyway, encouraged by this apparent success, the record dealing bug had already taken hold and before too long I wanted it for a full time job. In 1993 I organised my own Record Fair at the Foakes Hall in Dunmow. As the 1990's progressed the name Definitely Sound cropped up alongside more and more Definitely Sound Record Fairs. Up to 2005 we ran lots and lots of Fairs in the South East of England, taking in Dunmow, Bishops Stortford, Harlow, Sawbridgeworth, Takeley, Bury St Edmunds, Newmarket, Ely, Huntingdon, Cambridge & Barnet.
From 1998 to 2008 there was also a Definitely Sound Music stall on various markets. Braintree came first but by far our most regular and indeed favourite spot began in 2001 at Bury St Edmunds. However, in 2003 our Vinylsound outlet first appeared on eBay and as things have changed over the past few years it's become evident that eBay is the best place for a record dealer to display stock. So here we are, with Definitely Sound still going strong, still getting off on music every day, still very much involved in and loving the buying, selling, writing about, valuation of, the pleasure of, the fascination with and the superior sound of vinyl records.
