PozTech are a small
family company, who have been trading on eBay over two centuries, so first
of all, thanks for dropping by, to learn more about us! If you do not
have your questions answered here, then please feel free to contact
us.

We hand-pick
and import brand new items from three continents, and buy handmade pieces
based primarily on craftsmanship and appeal. We are also advocates of
fair trade, and while a lot of companies claim to be ethical traders (and
we've seen some quite frankly ridiculous statements on eBay and elsewhere
claiming the high moral ground, with some absolute claptrap), we thought
we would go into more detail.
- Dealing Directly
- we do buy directly, but we have to have somebody to do it on our behalf,
for which they receive a salary, rather than a commission. Once a year
we go to Indonesia, and our buying agent takes us around the villages
and cooperatives where our handicrafts are made, we ask the price (always
based on quality, not profit margins), and if the price is reasonable,
then a purchase will be made. But, we never haggle the price down -
obviously we're not the top entrepreneurs of the world, but we all sleep
well! But those companies who claim to visit every single artist on
their own with just a friendly smile and good intentions...how utterly
ridiculous. Do they speak the seven main languages of Indonesia (and
any other countries they visit)? Do they know all the customs particular
to certain areas, never mind islands? Will the head of every village
really allow a European to just turn up uninvited to their village?
And how on earth do they find the artists on their own? Yellow Pages?
- Sustainability
- I have seen some companies claim that all their wood is licensed and
ethically managed, but that is simply not true (I wish it was). The
highest certification is obviously FSC, but even that is problematic
(google FSC and Indonesia for tons of info), and the wood used for the
majority of handicrafts never gets licensed. But for the wood that should
need a license, the paperwork is unreliable; FSC teak for example, can
be more expensive, not because it is coming from managed forests, but
because the bribes are more expensive - sad but unfortunately true.
We try to mitigate this by buying sustainable wood which is grown as
a crop, but unless you buy a tree from a managed forest, follow it to
the sawmill, and then follow it to the woodworkers, you are never going
to be sure.

Please
take the time to visit our eBay Shop, where you will find beautiful handmade
items, which have been purchased directly from the artists, and because
we buy direct, we can also offer a bespoke service - last year for instance
we were commissioned to produce some two-metre tall Buddhas, which weighed
over 150 kilos - I may never stand up straight again!
