be seen. Dimensions are given to give a sense of scale. Please

appreciates a piece as much as you do, if so, please show them
a picture before placing a bid.

Testing
and Descriptions
Gold
tests are carried out with an electronic gold tester. This gives
a reliable test for Gold and its carat value. Silver is tested
using acid. Gold and Silver that are not hallmarked, cannot
however, be guaranteed to be Gold.
Stones
are tested with a thermal index tester, which gives a reliable
reading for semi precious and precious stones together with
the use of a loupe and a Chelsea Filter.
Weights
are given as a guide line only.
Carat
weights cannot be accurate unless stones are removed from their
setting, so all carat weights are estimated, sizes are given
carefully rounding downwards.
Circa
dating is used to give an approximation of age when items are
not hallmarked and should be reckoned to be within 10 years
accurate for 20th century items and 15 years for 19th century
pieces. Circa dating is given by comparing to pieces in books
and libraries both for appearance, materials used, wear and
craftsmanship.
Professional
photographic equipment is used to give an accurate reproduction
of the item as possible, manipulation of the photograph is not
carried out, occasionally a speck of dust may be removed from
the background. Every effort has been made to display colours
accurately, however as the actual colours you see will depend
on your monitor, we cannot guarantee that your monitor's display
of any colour will be accurate.
We
do not offer diamonds that are heavily included, however nor
do we provide diamond grading information, as antique diamonds
were not graded rather described as 'fine water' if of good
quality. The quality of the cut also varies. If you require
further detail in regards to the quality of diamonds please
ask.
Care
of Your Antique Jewellery
Some
antique treasures are delicate, all need to be treated with
care. Never use strong chemical cleaner on antique jewellery.
Use a weak solution of detergent (never soap) and a painter's
soft brush. A gold polishing cloth is also useful. Do not use
a sonic cleaner as this can cause damage.
Enamelled
pieces should be kept dry.
All
Georgian jewellery should be kept dry, in particular any foil
backed stone.
It
is strongly recommended that you do not wear antique jewellery
for housework or other physical work. Most pieces were designed
to be worn by ladies who had much leisure time. If a lady needed
to help in the kitchen she would not wear her jewels! She would
get dressed for afternoon tea and wear a few simple pieces.
Elaborate and precious items would be reserved for evening wear.
Please bear this in mind if you wish to enjoy your antique jewellery
for years to come.
Diamonds
need to be kept separate from other jewels, as they can scratch
other pieces and one another. Your Diamonds from Maryefine
will come in a jewellery case for safety.
Unboxed
pieces will be sent in a hand made felt pouch, this can be used
within your jewel case for protection.
If
you are unsure if a particular ring can be resized please take
a photograph of it to your jeweller who will be able to assess
it for sizing.
Be
wary of evaluation of your jewellery by a high street jeweller
who is unlikely to be qualified to give you an accurate appraisal
of your piece, there may also be a conflict of interest.
Antique
jewels offer a good opportunity for investment while at the
same time are wearable. The cultivation of taste and knowledge
is probably the best course to take when considering a purchase
on this basis. Many of the items offered by buy it now represent
our investment!
Enjoy
