Bike-pusher's page

Welcome

This is to tell you what I buy and sell on Ebay and why. If you check the feedback, you'll see it has a near-universal theme: motorcycles.

Japanese classic bikes

I'm a nut for Japanese motorcycles produced in the 1970s and early 1980s, probably because these are the machines that I cut my teeth on when I started riding in 1976.

As part of my work as a journalist, I buy, photograph, restore, ride and ultimately sell on all sorts of Japanese machines. Some I keep, and my personal fleet is always changing. I've discovered that this is the simplest way to obtain the bikes that feature within the pages I contribute to the classic motorcycle press. These have included a Honda CB750F2 (the last of the SOHC bikes). a Yamaha XS650, a Honda CB550F, a Honda CB125S (1972 vintage), an MZ TS150 (!), a Kawasaki Z650 and an SL125, all of which were bought, carefully fettled, ridden, photographed, and then disposed of, via Ebay.

What this means, if I'm bidding on something you're selling, is that I've recognised that what you've got is a genuine offering and not something that's been bodged, bashed or whatever, and I'm not wasting your time. If it's a component or accessory you're selling, it's probably destined for a restoration project I'm undertaking. Oh, and if you do try to pull the wool over my eyes, expect me to take a less relaxed viewpoint....

If you're buying a bike I'm selling, you can be sure that it's as described in the advert, and that it's not the usual rubbish, unless it's a non-runner that I've bought to pillage for spares, and then decided to offload. And if that's the case, it'll be described as such. Without blushing, I know my stuff here, unlike many other Ebay sellers who advertise something as "all original" when it's wearing a non-standard paint job and an aftermarket exhaust or "completely restored" when you can see the missing or defective components in the pictures.

Kindly note that I am not a trader. As part and parcel of my classic bike journalism, I am a genuine enthusiast. My own stable currently includes a Honda 400 Four (pictured below), Ducati 750SS, BMW K1100LT, BMW K100RS, Yamaha XS250, Suzuki TS250ER (due to be completely restored), and a shiny new Triumph Street Triple. Oh, and teenage son has a Honda CB250 Super Dream after cutting his teeth on a Yamaha DT50MX bought (and when he turned 17, sold) on Ebay, and then a CD125, again bought and sold on Ebay, and after that a CD250U, also bought and sold.... Right now, I'm looking for a Kawasaki GPZ900R, either a nice A1/A2 or a late A7/A8, if you know of one going. Some of the bikes I sell here I might have owned for some years or months and some I might have owned for only a few weeks or even days.

They will invariably be bikes that I actually like myself. There are far too many bikes being classified as desirable classics which were crap when new and now are just old crap. They may be bikes of sufficient quality to feature in magazines, or they may just be bikes I've had some fun with myself. I always try and put a realistic reserve or starting price on mine (but if people go bidding crazy, that's out of my hands!). For the various parts I'm clearing out - well, some are left over from various restoration projects and some are odd stuff I've acquired, magpie-like, over the last 30 years. I'm desperately trying to make space in the garage for more bikes!

Finally: feedback. I leave feedback for items sold when I receive the money. I leave feedback for items bought when I've seen they're OK and as described. I do not wait for someone else to leave feedback first.

The wife's Honda 400 Four, which I restored a few years ago. Still a work in progress, believe it or not. If I find a bike that has better components on it, I may buy it. I bought a whole nice running bike purely to secure the (now unobtainable) carrier you see mounted on it, and then sold the bike on.
