I wanted a bit of spending money in my summer holidays, after all,I was 14 and had just broken up from school for the summer vacation,my "small night jobs" of selling the "Evening Post" after school outside Aberystwyth's station,my Saturday bakery delivery job, then Sunday morning papers and later in the evening cleaning the local bakery vans was not exactly big money....But Mum and Dad could not afford to pay "pocket money"......and I wanted to save to buy my first motorcycle.
So....I went to ask for a summer job in the local sewing factory, called
E.Walters( Ludlow ) Ltd.
Start Monday!..said Mr Marsh...so my life in the sewing world started at 15 years of age on the 9th September 1969.....
In a matter of weeks I was earning nearly double what my father was as a long distance lorry driver. Then came the time to return to school for my final year to study and then join the Royal Navy,well.... you could then leave school at 14 if your birthday was in the vacation, which, mine was.....so I stayed at the factory, things progressed and I worked my way up through the factory, eventually landing a trainee managerial position.
Well......the bosses son (Julian) and I did'nt get on all that well,as he had just walked back into the business from whatever he had been doing and obviously taken a high position within the company.
"My" manager was a stickler...I still have fond memories of the "swine"<<lol>>Elwyn Thomas Garry Marsh his name was / is................A bit of a lad if the truth be known.....But was ALWAYS a company man.....he too used to feel "pushed aside" by Julian.
Anyway........Julian and I had a huge fall out one day about the way things "should" be done and I wanted to pack it all in..........Elwyn calmed me down and offered my old position back of head mechanic, now covering several other factories including Aberystwyth.
As you all know.........it was getting increasingly difficult to compete with the third world and their cheaper than chips wages bill....so in all "Julians" wisdom, he saw the light and started to look for cheaper labour in Czechoslovakia.....then other units followed on in Amman etc, etc, etc.
The writing was on the wall...so already doing sewing alterations on a small scale,I decided to up the stakes and put more time and energy into developing "Alans Alterations" the "AA" to the sewing world of the neatest name in
"ALterAtioNS"
Already in the sewing world and in many cases,on first name terms with several big manufacturers of haberdashery and sewing machine companies,I began to build up my stock and empire, with the notion of,
If I cant afford it, I dont buy it, no loans, no help.
The inevitable happened and E Walters (Ludlow) Ltd closed down all their factories in the UK
The payoff redundancy for 25 years dedicated service was minimal........in essence...A JOKE!
Many days I would work from 7am-7pm 6 days a week and even then get called out by the police in the dark of night as I was the key holder for no extra payment...being a "STAFF MEMBER".
I swore from the day I left, I would never work for a private company again!
I wrote to all the large companies like YKK, Opti, Singer, Pfaff, Juki, Brother, Willcox and Gibbs, MEC-Bogod etc, etc, etc for "deals".
Nothing forthcoming....so I was off......I went everywhere buying new stock from bankrupt and closed down factories who, just as Walters did, had just given up and sold out and moved out of "Blighty".......MIND YOU...with the present legislation, workers rights and now the stupid new distance selling laws etc, etc, etc, ..its a wonder anyone still produces and employ staff in the UK at all !!
I still buy new stock from closed auctions within the larger companies...that way we can all benefit....hence my ULTRA low prices for you all on Ebay....selling for a fraction of the SUPER RICH FAT CAT SHARE HOLDERS trade price of the high priced top name companies. But still keeping the high quality at FANTASTICALLY low prices, as all of my haberdashery customers will back me up.....
We now import top Japanese quality sewing machines which are manufactured in the same factory alongside Brother, Juki, Neechi, Singer, which we have labeled up as
ALANSEW
We now also get zips custom made at the factory that produces for YKK
So the vast majority of our stock is compatable with YKK
When you see the "AA" or the "ALANSEW" brand...Thats us!!
Its okay if dealers buy from us...I'm okay about it,even if they want to sell them on....I'm fine about it I really am.......the more I sell...the better it is for us all.
So,sewing for over 40 years,I still get excited sometimes after I finish a jacket or a pair of slacks that a customer could not find.....or......I make a pair up from an "old faithfull" that a customer loves......yes,the sparkle still lives on.......
I am now fully self employed and registered as Alan Alterations...I refuse to be VAT regulated....so you all benefit from not paying for the two Jags of Mr Precott and Mr Blair's new houses....Yes...we have a new idiot "leading" the other idiots....Mr Brown.....trying desperatly to hide even more expences and flash lifestyle and generating their high pensions of our lovely members of parliment we all have to pay through the nose for............for them to do naff all for the working man / woman.
If you have ever had alterations done in Aberystwyth or the surrounding area...then there is a good chance that somewhere along the line..I have been involved.
Its hard living in Aberystwyth, with the sea to the west,we have only have half a business,so having Ebay is a godsend.....as I'm sure most of the people in Scotland and Ireland will agree.
Good News....
Yes.....thanks to our long established customer database, we have now moved into a VERY NICE new unit at
UNIT 16
TREOWAIN ENTERPRISE PARK
MACHYNLLETH
POWYS

Yes.........we now have "nearly" everything under one roof.....the rest is in Aberystwyth for our daily bread and butter orders through ebay.
We can now SHOW OFF our 250 Industrial Sewing Machine stock.
Also.....there is a 99.99% chance of us having the zip you require here too.....or come to that, any haberdashery item you might have thought was no longer available.
So....if you are looking for an Industrial Sewing Machine....give us a ring on
01970 820200
or
01654 700008
and I will personally do my best to supply the machine, set up to your purpose.
We supply a range of accessoiries with all our new Alansew and our fully serviced used machines.
If you dont have the particular machine you need......we can probably get one for you.
We can also deliver to any location in the UK.
We also use Palletline who can also deliver your machine for a lot less than us personally delivering it.
Just ask...............
We have a huge stock here....all paid for...no loans...its all ours.
We now take all credit cards
A huge breakthrough here in Wales....
The largest independant "ALL PAID FOR" Sewing Centre in Wales.
Pop over and try a few, if not all our machines with no obligation to purchase whatsoever.
But.......I personally warn you.....if you enjoy sewing...you'll be like a kid in a sweetshop!
My thought of the year is 80% tax on petrol is far too much.........But we still happily pay it !!
WHY ???
Let the petrol companies go to hell and get the farmers back to work and grow rape seed to run diesel engines for us all, or even better, lets use Hydrogen from the water around us,that way,the only emission is water.
Yes....you got it right...the oil giants pay for governments... so its not going to happen is it?
Happy Bidding....
Happy Shopping...
Happy eBay!
Congratulations eBay on another sucessfull year!!
Kind Regards
Alan..
